Spanish telco Telefónica has published a detailed report on Internet of Things (IoT) adoption in Spain. According to the document, 87 percent of existing users claim that they are “loyal” to the IoT and would not give up the benefits of their applications.

The desire to acquire and use connected devices is growing among nearly 50 percent of the population, with the number of users increasing by 66 percent over the past two years. Nearly two-thirds of Spanish citizens now have some level of knowledge of the IoT, it says.

Connected car devices, smart watches, smart household appliances, home access control and energy efficiency applications, ride sharing and urban parking applications are among the use cases studied in the report, titled Things Matter 2019 – the second edition of a study first published in 2017.

Personal transport is becoming one of the “great engines of the IoT”, it says. The ability to create Wi-Fi networks inside cars and the increase in safety brought about by providing drivers with real-time information – including continuous analysis of their vehicle’s performance – are among the biggest benefits.

Words like ‘comfort’, ‘security’, ‘control’, and ‘connectivity’ are now more closely associated with the IoT, adds the report. In fact, the concept of control appears among the most mentioned by those surveyed, when the consumer begins to appreciate the benefits of the IoT in energy saving at home or in the car, or a more efficient use in their everyday activities.

“In terms of security, the more we understand new technologies, the more users understand how to distinguish what is safe from what is not, to take measures and to prioritise benefits over risks. Thus, more than 50 percent of those surveyed show a confident attitude towards data security.”

The study covers both what consumers think about the IoT and the different ways that professionals responsible for digital transformation in industrial, commercial or institutional verticals are using the technology.

Industrial use has matured and become “fully-fledged with the implementation of specific IoT developments and applications in its processes”, it says. Organisations have “passed the IoT test phase” and are demanding more progress in specific IoT applications and solutions.

To date, the most dynamic area has been Smart Cities, with sensors measuring temperature, air quality, and transport flow, with detailed analysis of people’s use of public services.

Sustainability is a key criterion for promoting connected device programmes. “There has been a shift from a strictly functional vision to a commitment from both industry and users to build a sustainable and safe technological ecosystem, in which environmental factors are taken into account,” explains the report.

“Four out of every five users of electric rental cars say the low environmental impact is the reason for choosing them, and six out of every ten Spanish Internet users would be willing to pay a little more to their electricity, gas, and water suppliers if they offered intelligent devices that contributed to sustainability.”

Vicente Muñoz, global manager of IoT at Telefónica, said, “The essence of the second edition of this report is to provide greater understanding about the relationship between users and connected things; to continue contributing to the commitment of all of us who participate in the IoT revolution, whatever role we play in it.”

“In short, to continue discovering the new possibilities that connected things give us in this world, which is undergoing a complete transformation”.
